History of Spiritism
Throughout all Humanity history, there have always been
people capable of perceiving the presence of spirits,
their messages and their influences on the material
world. But people did not know much about it and were
afraid of anything related to spirits.
If some child said that he was seeing a spirit, for
example, no one knew what to do. Sometimes they believed
in the child but they were terrified. They used to take
the child to someone who knew to pray to let the spirit
away. At other times, they did not believe and quarrel
with the child telling her/him not to make up stories.
One day, in Paris, France, a very intelligent and
studious teacher was invited by a friend to attend
meetings where there were demonstrations of spirits.
During the meetings, some objects moved and people could
talk to the spirits and ask them questions.
That teacher was Allan Kardec. He was not afraid of the
spirits, on the contrary. He became very interested and
wanted to know more and more about everything that
happened in those meetings and what the spirits had to
say.
Allan Kardec called those people who perceived the
spirits of mediums, which means intermediaries. The
mediums who saw spirits were called Seeing Mediums.
Those who heard were the Hearing Mediums. Others wrote
messages and were called Mechanical Mediums. There were
still those who spoke, as if it were the spirit that was
speaking, and they were called Speaking Mediums. And so
on.
The spirits told Allan Kardec that they were the men and
women who lived here on Earth and that, after their
bodies died, they went to the spirit world.
Allan Kardec talked to them many times and asked about
several subjects. He became aware that there is
reincarnation, which is the possibility of spirits being
born again in another body, and that Jesus was the most
evolved spirit ever born on Earth. He also knew that God
exists, is good, just and made the moral laws that we
must follow. He also understood that all spirits were
create by God to evolve and be happy, and who is evil is
because has not yet evolved.
Allan Kardec learned many and many things. It was so
much that he organized, classified and published the
teachings in books. Thus came the Spirit Doctrine or
Spiritism, which is a religion, because it teaches us
good things that bring us closer to God. It is also a
science, because it studies the phenomena connected to
the spirits and the mediumship. And it is still a
philosophy, because it deals with the mysteries of life
and death.
Spiritism was therefore not born from Kardec's will to
found a religion, but of his desire to know the truth.
Allan Kardec was not the inventor Spiritism, because the
knowledge came from the spirits and not from him. He is
called the encoder of Spiritism and he is very much
appreciated for the work he has done, since it was not
easy at all. In fact, he faced many difficulties in
accomplishing his work.
First, he had to rely on the collaboration of the
mediums and identify which were the ones who transmitted
the messages of the spirits correctly. Some mediums
mixed the ideas of the spirits with their own, which is
often to the mediums who do not yet have much training.
Moreover, even the medium being good, there was still
the possibility that the message was from a deceitful
spirit, who spoke wrong things just to amuse and disrupt
Kardec's studies. These spirits signed the names of
other spirits who were good and wise to pass through
them, many times. However, Kardec learned to recognize
those who were not good, by the language and the way of
speaking of them.
Kardec was very clever. He used to ask a question and
note the answer. Then, on another day, he asked the same
question, only with other words. Just to see if the
spirit gave the same answer. He also asked the same
question, again, to other spirits, through other
mediums. So he compared the answers to see if they were
alike and made sense with other teachings.
Gradually, Kardec met several mediums. Many people were
interested in collaborating with his studies. There were
about thousands of Spirit groups or centers spread out
in several countries. Allan Kardec would send his
questions to them and then compare the answers with
those coming from elsewhere. Only then he could ensure
that the answers were reliable and the teachings true.
Both Allan Kardec and the mediums, and even the spirits
who sent the messages, had already been prepared in the
spiritual world for this great and important mission
that was given to them by our dear Master Jesus.
Thanks to this wonderful team, we have today the Spirit
Doctrine that enlightens our minds and hearts and helps
us to evolve and become happier.
