Theme: Divine Providence; prayer
The salvation of the train
In a European country, on a very rainy afternoon, a
train driver, full of faith in God, starting to drive
the locomotive with the passenger train for the long
journey, observed the dark sky and repeated the Sunday
prayer with great feeling.
The train ran leagues and leagues through the darkness
when, late at night, the driver saw, in the light of the
lit beacon, some signs that seemed to him made by the
shadow of two anguished arms that motioned for his
attention and help.
Thrilled, he stopped the train suddenly and got off,
followed by a few travelers, to walk along the railroad
tracks and try to understand the reason for the signs he
had observed.
A few steps were enough to notice a huge flood on the
road ahead. The river had overflowed with heavy rains
and water had violently invaded the land, destroying the
bridge through which the convoy would pass.
The train had been miraculously saved.
Seen with infinite joy, the driver and the travelers
sought the person who had given them the saving warning,
but no one showed up.
It was then that they heard a whistling sound and saw an
animal flying by next to them. As he flapped its wings
in the steady light of the train's headlight, the driver
realized that the image he had seen and thought to be
two distressed arms beckoning to him was actually the
wings of that great bat that had flown in front of the
train.
The train driver, impressed by the incident, told the
travelers how he had prayed earnestly for God's
protection before leaving.
Realizing that this could not be a mere coincidence of
facts, he knelt there, grateful to Divine Providence,
exclaiming loudly:
- Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come unto us, Thy will be done in earth, as
it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and
lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil.
So be it!
When he finished praying, great stillness reigned in the
landscape.
All the passengers, believers and unbelievers, were also
kneeling, repeating the prayer with loving respect. Some
wept with excitement and recognition, thanking Heavenly
Father.
An animal even seen with fear by some that night had
been God's instrument to save all.
The remarkable experience inspired teachings.
Even the rain had stopped falling, as if the silent sky
was just as well following the sublime emotion.
