Theme: Power of Kindness
The three mountain winds
Long ago, three winds lived on the peak of a very high
mountain. The first was the Big-and-Furious Wind. He
would blow like this:
- Uuuuuuuuuuuuu! ...
And the faster he moved, the stronger his breath was:
- Uoooooooooo-Eeeeeeeee! ... - like a siren.
He was a very important wind.
The second was a wind called Strong-and-Decided Wind.
His breath was like this:
- Hooooooooooooooo ...
He was a very important wind too.
The third wind was the Hot-Day Wind. His breath was very
weak. It was nice to hear him bang against the foliage:
- Vvvvvvvvvvv.
One day the three winds met and began talking on the
mountaintop.
Big-and-Furious Wind said:
- Hooooooooouuuuuuuuummmmm, I'm very important! When
people see me coming, they rush to pack everything they
can so that I can't carry it; but it makes no
difference. I do the biggest damage. Just see what will
happen.
Big-and-Furious Wind took a deep breath.
Strong-and-Decisive Wind and Hot-Day Wind moved away as
quickly as possible. The sky hid his face. Then, a
little bit at first, but growing and growing,
Big-Furious Wind blew:
- Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuu! ... Ooooooooooooooooooo! ...
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
The mountain inhabitants rushed to keep what they could
before entering the house, but it made little
difference; everything went to the air. Big-and-Furious
Wind knocked down the lampposts, tore off the poles, the
big tree branches, and scattered them to the ground. He
knocked over the fences and carried them far away.
When he was done, the mountain people went out to see
what had happened. How much had been ruined and broken!
So, they were very sad.
- See? - Shouted Big-and-Furious Wind - I'm very
important, aren't I?
- Yes - said Strong-and-Decided Wind - but I don't think
that's a way of being important. You are important to
people who are afraid of you. But I am important because
I am helpful. I can dry my clothes very quickly and I
can make sailboats travel fast across the seas! See what
happens when I blow!
Strong-and-Decided Wind took a breath and blew:
- Hooooooooooooo! ...
The clouds traveled fast across the sky. The children
ran into the house to wrap up. The wet clothes dried
quickly. And the sailboats in the sea at the base of the
mountain lifted the sails and went out fast, cutting the
waves.
- See? - Said the Strong-and-Decided Wind - I'm really
very important and much more useful than you. Isn't that
true, Hot-Day Wind?
Hot-Day Wind agreed, speaking softly:
- Yes. Very important and useful as well.
- And? - Said Big-and-Furious Wind - What can you do?
- Yes - added Strong-and-Decided Wind - what can you do?
Hot-day Wind sighed:
- I don't know, but I'll see.
So Hot-day Wind came out of the mountain.
The sun was hot and so on. The sky was very blue and so
it was. But as the wind passed, people would open their
windows and turn their hot faces in the direction in
which it blew. They left their homes and smiled;
well-being and joy were on their faces.
The Wind blew and found a little boy with a parrot; blew
as hard as he could. The parrot rose, the boy was
pleased, very pleased.
Then he saw another boy by a pool of water. In the
puddle were two small boats with paper sails, but they
did not move. Hot-Day Wind smiled, watching the boats
move.
Then he saw a bird on the edge of the nest.
- Fly! - blew the wind.
- I'm afraid - said the bird.
The wind blew very gently and forced the bird out of the
nest. Then the bird, losing its fear, flew away.
Hot-Day Wind returned to his friends high on the
mountain. He felt ashamed:
- I don't think I did much - he said with a sigh.
Strong-and-Decided Wind, however, said to him:
- We couldn't see what you did from here, but you got
something we couldn't do.
- One thing you couldn't do? - Asked the Hot-Day Wind.
- Yes - said Strong-and-Decided Wind - Big-and-Furious
Wind does havoc, so mountain residents are afraid of
him. I am helpful to them and so they receive me. But
you, Hot-Day Wind, you make them happy. We saw how happy
those people were when you passed. For this reason, you
are the most important of the three of us. Rejoice
everyone.
Hot-Day Wind descended from the mountain, happily. Down
below, adults and children, feeling the return of the
Hot-Day Wind, were radiant, happy again.
The little boy saw his parrot rise again. Through the
garden the little bird flew, flapping its wings on the
Hot-Day Wind, as a boat walks in the sea.
