Moving on

Miguel and his family had just moved to a new city because of his father's job.

But Miguel was not enjoying the change. He missed his old room and the new house still needed some adjustments. There was no mirror in the bathroom and Miguel was surprised to have to brush his hair without being able to see himself. He couldn't find his toys or clothes, which were still in the moving boxes.

One afternoon, after doing his homework from school, Miguel grabbed his soccer ball and went to distract himself in the yard.

He started kicking the ball against the wall and his mother, hearing the noise, went into the yard and warned him:

- Careful, Miguel, you don't need to kick so hard. Don't break the pots!

Miguel paid no attention and continued to play. Suddenly, due to a very bad and strong kick, the ball went too high and cross over the wall. Miguel heard the sound of glass breaking. The ball had gone through the window of the neighbor's house. Miguel was terrified. He ran into the house, not knowing what to do.

Embarrassed, Miguel told his mother what had happened.

She hugged him and said:

- Calm down, son! It doesn't have to be like this! Let's go talk to the neighbor. We will offer to pay for the window repair and apologize for the inconvenience. You can't undo what happened, but let's do what it is possible now.

Miguel didn’t want to go, he rather that his mother solved everything by herself. But he had to go anyway. When the neighbor answered, Miguel's mother introduced them, with big shame, apologized. The neighbor was kind and even returned the ball. They agreed on repairing and paying for the glass.

Everything was fine. But not for Miguel. In addition to the new house, the new school, the lack of friends, he was now ashamed to have broken the neighbor's window that they didn't even know.

His mother, realizing that the son was dejected, called him to talk. Miguel, then, taking advantage of his mother's attention, began to complain about everything.

He talked about all the things he didn't like. He explained that he felt guilty for kicking hard, even after she warned him. He ended by saying that nothing was going right for him in that city and that he wanted to leave.

The mother listened to him carefully and calmly.

- Son, you know that your father's job is here now. And complaining about everything it is not going to solve a thing. Do you know what we have to do when everything is bad?

Miguel shook his head, saying no. She continued:

- We need to identify each thing that is bothering us and persist in doing what it is necessary for things to improve. That´s it, we need to move forward, with good attitudes.

- It can't be improved anything here; it is so bad - Miguel replied crossly.

- But we won't know before we try - said the mother, optimistically, taking out a pen and paper - Let's make a list.

The list started with the arrangements for the house: buying curtains for the bedrooms, unpacking the moving boxes, packing things in the cupboards, putting a mirror in the bathroom, etc.

On the following days, they carried out the items on the list. They modified some, added others, but remained committed to making things better. After a while, it really started to happen.

Miguel made some friends at school and started playing football matches, which he loved.

He met the neighbor's son and played with him a few times. When at his house, he was always polite. The neighbor treated him well and he was no longer ashamed of what had happened.

Miguel's house was getting cozy and he loved the decoration of his new room.

In a few months, Miguel was already adapted to the new city, where he started to live happily.

Persisting in positive attitudes is the right way to transform our lives for the better.
