Parable of the Good Samaritan
Jesus once told a story that became known as the Parable
of the Good Samaritan.
In this story, a man was traveling from the city of
Jerusalem to Jericho and on the way, he was robbed and
beaten. The man was left lying on the side of the road,
injured, with no strength and no resources to get out of
there. He really needed help.
Sometime later, a priest, that is, an important man of
the religion of that people, passed by the same road.
But even though he was educated in the scriptures, he
passed on the other side of the road and did not help
the man.
Then a Levite passed by, who was also a person who
carried out religious activities, but he acted like the
priest and also did not stop to help the man.
Finally, a Samaritan came to the same way. The
Samaritans were from other people and were not well
regarded by the Hebrews. They followed different
religious practices. But it was this Samaritan who acted
with mercy.

Seeing the fallen man, the Samaritan stopped to
help. He cleaned and bandaged his wounds and
helped
|
the man mount his animal to take him to an inn. |
The next day the Samaritan had to continue his journey,
but he gave money to the owner of the inn so that he
could continue to take care of the man and even said
that when he returned, he would pay more, if necessary.
When he finished telling this parable, Jesus explained
that the Samaritan acted as the neighbor of that needy
man and that this is how we should act too.
Jesus taught us with this story that it's not just
important to know God's laws or follow a religion. What
really matters is helping people and being good.
The parable of the good Samaritan confirms what Jesus
said on other occasion: that we should do to others what
we would like others to do to us.
When we all act like this, our world will be much
happier.
