One day four
year-old Raphael
noticed some
agitation in the
house and became
restless.
His father put
him on his lap
and said:
- My son, I'll
take Mom to the
doctor but we
will be back
soon.
- I want to go
too! I want to
go too!
- No, Raphael.
Stay here with
Aunt Edir, okay?
Raphael was not
satisfied,
thinking of why
couldn't he go
along? What was
happening to his
mother?
He sat on the
sofa and did not
leave it until
his parents
returned home.
It was no help
that Aunt Edir
invited him to a
stroll, to eat
some candy and
ice cream.
Against all odds,
he accepted
nothing and
stayed buried in
the couch.
Upon hearing the
front door open,
Raphael went to
meet his parents.
His parents
hugged him and
his mother
wrapped him in
her arms
lovingly, saying:
- My son, you
will no longer
be alone in the
house!
- No?
- No. You will
have a baby
brother. Isn't
that great?! ...
The boy thought
for a while. He
did not like the
idea much. As
Raphael remained
silent, she
asked:
- So, what do
you think of the
news of getting
a buddy to play
with you?
- I like it.
The mother did
not see firmness
in his response.
But the truth is
that Raphael was
not really
convinced that
it would be nice
to get a brother.
He would have to
share his toys,
his clothes, his
storybooks,
parental
attention and
everything else
...
Over the months,
Raphael's mood
grew
increasingly
worse. His mom
took him
shopping ... for
the baby. They
went out to
choose a new
crib ... for the
baby. They
bought a new
trolley ... for
the baby.
Everything was
for the baby!
Raphael had had
enough. Whenever
his mother
invited him out,
she would be
thinking of the
baby about to be
born. Whew! What
an annoying guy!
He was hindering
Raphael's life
even before
birth. Imagine
later.
One day Raphael
was playing with
a toy car on the
living room rug
when his mom
screamed:
- Oh! ...
Raphael, your
brother moved!
Put your hand
here and you
will feel it!
Come on, don't
be afraid.
His mother
insisted so much
that he stood up
and walked to
her. His mother
took Raphael's
little hand and
placed it on her
belly. The boy
felt a

nice
little heat
coming from
there. Suddenly
Raphael felt
something like a
kick. |
|
|
|
- Mom, he's
kicking me. I
guess he did not
want me to put
my hand on him.
But suddenly
Raphael got
quiet and very
still. And
without
understanding
how it happened,
he began to see
the baby inside
his mom's tummy.
He had his eyes
closed and had
his hand on his
mouth. It was an
amazing
experience!
|
Surprised, the
boy shouted:
- Mom, it is not
a boy. It's a
girl! ...
The mother
smiled and
explained:
- We still
cannot know if
it's a boy or
girl, my dear.
- Well, I'm sure,
Mom. It's a
girl!
Strangely,
Raphael had no
jealousy or
anger of baby
that was coming
to take his
space anymore.
Now he knew that
the baby would
not do anything
like that: she
would not take
his cars, his
clothes, his
books. It was a
girl and girls
play with
different things
than boys!
The mother was
surprised but
said nothing.
Her son spoke
with such
conviction that
she did not
contradict him.
Fifteen days
later, she went
to the doctor
and the exam
confirmed: it
was a girl.
Arriving home,
the mother asked
Raphael:
- How did you
know it was a
girl, dear?
- I told you,
Mom. I saw a
girl in your
belly, remember?
- No, I did not
forget, my dear.
It's just that I
do not
understand how
come you knew it
is a girl!
Raphael smiled
and explained:
- Ah! It's
because she said
she is a girl
and even told me
her name: Maria
Clara!
Thrilled, the
mother hugged
her son who
could not have
imagined these
things and
decided: she had
never bothered
much with the
immortality of
the soul nor
believe in life
after death, but
now needed to
start thinking
about it because
the truth is
that her husband
and her, when
choosing a name
for the baby,
had decided that
if it was a boy
it would be
Alvaro, and if
it was a girl,
Maria Clara.
However, Raphael
was not aware of
that decision of
his parents,
which left them
very impressed.
A few days later,
after she talked
to her husband,
they both went
to see Saul, a
friend of theirs
who was a
Spiritist and
who could give
them all the
necessary
explanations.
