The noble mission of the Christian Spiritist Medium

Part 2 (final)

Mediumship practiced in the light of Spiritism is a permanent source of blessings and harmony

"(...) Before becoming a medium of common phenomena, do not forget that everyone who gives himself the simplest collaboration in the work of good is Jesus' instrument in the improvement of the world".
 – Agar1

Hundreds of High Spirits hover above us and direct the spiritualist movement, inspiring the mediums, projecting on the men of action the vibrations of their will, the glow of their own genius.

I know of several groups that have such assistance. Through the pen, through the lips of the mediums, the Spirit-guides dictate instructions, make their admonitions heard; and in spite of the imperfections of the environment and the obscurities that cushion and veil the irradiations of thought, it is always a pervasive delight, a joy of the Soul, a very gratifying comfort to savor the beauty of their written thoughts, to listen to the inflections of their words, which come to us as a distant and powerful echo of the heavenly regions.

The descent into our terrestrial world is an act of self-denial and a reason for suffering for the High Spirit. Our admiration and recognition for the generosity of these Souls would never be too great; they do not retreat in the face of contact with the coarse fluids, like these noble ladies, delicate, sensitive, who, at the impulse of charity, penetrate disgusting places, to bring help and consolation.

(...) In every human being there are rudiments of mediumship, faculties in germ, which can be developed by practicing them. For the greatest number, a long, persevering work is needed. In some, these faculties have been revealed since childhood, and effortlessly they have reached a high degree of perfection over the years. In such a case, they represent the result of previous acquisitions, the fruit of the labors carried out on Earth or in Space, a result that we bring with us when we are reborn.

Among the sensitives, many have the intuition of a superior, extraterrestrial world, in which there are, as a reserve, powers that they can acquire through intimate communion and high aspirations, and then manifest them in different forms, appropriate to their nature: predictions, teachings, curative action, etc. Applied in such a sense, mediumship becomes a precious faculty, through which immense benefits can be liberalized and great works accomplished.

Spiritual World: Endless Source of Energy Achieved by Prayer

Humanity would be provided with a powerful element of renewal, if everyone understood that there is, above us, an endless source of energy, of spiritual life, which can be achieved by gradual training, by constant orientation of thought and will in order to assimilate its waves and radiations, and with its help develop the faculties that lie dormant in us. The acquisition of these forces brings us against evil, places us above material conflicts and makes us more firm in the fulfillment of duty. None of the earthly goods is comparable to the possession of these gifts. Sublimated to their highest degree, they make great missionaries, renovators, and great inspired ones.

How can we acquire these powers, these higher faculties? Opening our souls, by will and prayer, to the influences from on High. In the same way that we open the doors of our house, so that the rays of the Sun can come in, so also by our impulses and aspirations we can open our inner “ego” to the heavenly emanations. This is where the beneficial and healthy action of prayer manifests itself. By humble, brief, fervent prayer, the soul expands and gives access to the radiations of the Divine Focus. Prayer, to be effective, should not be a banal recitation, a memorized formula, but rather a request from the heart, an act of the will, which attracts the universal fluid, the vibrations of divine dynamism. Or the soul must also project itself, externalize itself by a vigorous surge and, depending on the acquired impulse, enter into communication with the ethereal worlds.

Thus, the prayer tears a fluid path through which human souls ascend and the Higher souls descend, in such a way that an intimate communion is established between one and the other, and the Spirit of man is illuminated and strengthened by the sparks and energies expressed from the Celestial Spheres.

In Spiritism, the issue of education and training of mediums is crucial; good mediums are rare - it is said - many times, and the science of the invisible, deprived of means of action, only very slowly comes to progress.

How many precious faculties, however, are lost, due to little attention and culture! How many mediums are wasted in frivolous experiences, or which, used as a whim, attract no more than evil influences and only produce bad results! How many mediums, who are unaware of their ministry and of the value of the gift given to them, let go with no use forces capable of contributing to the work of renewal!

Mediumship is a delicate flower that, in order to bloom, needs accurate precautions and assiduous care; it demands the method, the patience, the high aspirations, the noble feelings, and, above all, the tender solicitude of the good Spirit that envelops it in its love, in its life-giving fluids. Almost always, however, they want to reach premature results, and therefore it weakens and dries with the contact of backward Spirits.

In antiquity, sensitive young people who revealed special skills were removed from the world, segregated from all degrading influence, in places devoted to worship, surrounded by everything that could elevate their sense of beauty. Such were vestals, druids, sibyls, etc. The same happened in the schools of prophets and seers in Judea, located far from the noise of the cities. In the silence of the desert, in the peace of the altering tops, the initiates could better attract superior influences and question the Invisible. Thanks to this education, results were obtained that surprise us.

Cultivation of Mediumship in Today's Times

The processes described above are inapplicable today... Social demands do not always allow the medium to dedicate himself, as it should, to cultivate his faculties. His attention is distracted by the thousand needs of family life, his aspirations hindered by the contact of society more or less corrupted or frivolous. He is often called upon to exercise his skills in circles impregnated with impure fluids, with inharmonic vibrations, which react on his so impressionable organism and produce disorders and disturbances.

It is necessary that, at least, the medium, aware of the usefulness and greatness of his function, applies himself to increase his knowledge and tries to become as spiritual as possible, to reserve hours of recollection and then try, through his inner vision, to even to divine things, to eternal and perfect beauty. The more developed knowledge, intelligence and morality are in it, the more apt he will become to serve as an intermediary for the great souls of Space.

The important thing for the medium, we said above, is to ensure effective protection. The assistance from Above is always provided for the purpose we propose, for the efforts we make to deserve it.

We are helped, supported, according to the importance of the missions that are incumbent on us, bearing in mind the general interest. These missions are accompanied by tests, inevitable difficulties, but always regulated according to our strengths and aptitudes.

Performed with dedication, with selflessness, our tasks elevate us in the hierarchy of souls. Neglected, forgotten, unfulfilled, they make us station on the progress ladder. All carry responsibilities. From the father of a family who instills in his children the elementary notions of good, the preceptor of youth, the moralist writer, to the orator who seeks to take the crowds to the culminations of thought, each has his mission to fulfill...

There is no more noble, higher office than being called to propagate, under the inspiration of the Invisible Powers, the truth throughout the world, to make men hear the attenuated echo of divine invitations, inciting them to light and perfection. Such is the role of high mediumship.

If the mediums do not understand the importance of their function and the extent of their duties, there will be in the exercise of their powers a source of abuse and ills... Psychic gifts, deviated from their eminent purpose, used for the purpose of mediocre interests, personal and tactile, revert against their possessors, attracting them, instead of tutelary geniuses, the evil powers of the Hereafter.

Mediumistic Practice Requires Responsibility, Discipline and Study

We talk about responsibility. It is necessary to insist on this point. Many mediums seek, in the exercise of their faculties, satisfactions of self-love or interest. They neglect to make this serious, reflected, almost religious feeling come into their work, which is one of the conditions for success. They often forget that mediumship is one of the means of action because the divine plan is carried out, and that he does not have the right to use it according to his fantasy.

If the mediums have not understood the importance of their function and the extent of their duties, there will be in the exercise of their powers a source of abuse and ills... Psychic gifts, deviated from their eminent purpose, used for the purpose of mediocre interests, personal and tactile, revert against their possessors, attracting them, instead of tutelary geniuses, the evil powers of the Hereafter.

Outside the conditions of elevated thought, morality and disinterest, mediumship can be a danger; whereas in order to have a firm purpose in the good, through his aspirations to the divine ideal, the medium is impregnated with purified fluids; a protective atmosphere is formed around him, surrounds him, preserves him from the mistakes and the pitfalls of the invisible...

And if, by his faith and proven zeal, by the purity of Soul in which no selfish calculation insinuates, he obtains the assistance of one of these Spirits of light, custodians of the secrets of Space, who hover above us and project on ours. weakness of its radiations; if that Spirit constitutes his protector, his guide, his friend, thanks to him the medium will feel an unknown force penetrate his whole being, a flame will light his forehead. All those who take part in their work, and reap the results, will feel their hearts and intelligence revive to the flashes of that superior soul; a breath of life will transport their thoughts to the sublime regions of the Infinite”.

It is not without reason that, in a poetic and enlightening way, Casimiro Cunha composed:

"Numerous faculties

Do not represent light,

A good medium is the one

Who always walks with Jesus”.
