The importance of home when the subject is drugs
It’s known by our readers the conclusion of a research performed by the University of Texas, United States, which affirms that the practice of a religion tends to keep young people out of drugs and risky activities, once a religious faith increases self-esteem and help preventing emotional diseases.
Posterior studies conducted by three centers of research – the University of the Basque Country (Spain), the University of Los Andes (Colombia) and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Brazil) – have evidenced that a chemical dependent isn’t formed on the streets and his tendency for using drugs starts at home, but – on the other hand – a good education can prevent it.
These studies innovate by not having analyzed the subject-matter only from the perspective of a youngster who has become dependent. It has also tried to find out what the ones who don’t consume toxics think and what make them not to get attracted by drugs despite so many appeals.
The answer found in Brazil, Colombia and Spain was just one: children don’t feel the need to search for an escape through drugs at homes where dialogue, affection and coziness exist.
To stimulate the spiritual principles in opposition to material values is one of the resources proposed by specialists to prevent such harm. Unless experiencing an extreme emotional unbalance, a person that has a clear notion of life has no reason to use drugs as a mean to drown his problems, because he knows that vicissitudes exist to be overcome and not do knock us down.
That’s what the studies recommend: an open dialogue, affection, caress, constant presence, a cozy home and good examples.
Regarding alcohol and smoking, although they’re legal and of general use, it’s also recommended that the parents avoid them, if they don’t want their children doing the same. On the top of that, the familiar rules must be clear in a way that, when parents establish some prohibition, nobody doubts the reason behind it.
These observations have a great importance specially because, as they come from centers of study which aren’t related to any religion, they confirm what Christian religions have been trying to teach but are often unsuccessful.
The earthly existence is a level of evolution, as Spiritism teaches us. This level is rich in trials, vicissitudes and challenges. But even children know that troubles can’t be overcome if we run away from them and, therefore, there’s no option: it’s necessary to face them and win.
