Laura was only
eight years old,
and was very
generous at
heart. She
always wanted to
help other
people.
 |
One day at the
Spiritist
Education class
she heard the
teacher talking
about the
importance of
charity. Jesus’
message was
about being
charitable and
Laura started to
think she needed
to help others
more. Even
though she was
very young, she
could do
something good
for another
person.
She then
thought...
thought... and
decided:
— Right! I will
give money to
someone in
need.
|
She went through
her mother’s
belongings and
found a
beautiful coin.
Laura’s mother
saw her walking
towards the
front door and
asked her where
she was going.
She looked
really happy
since she was
planning to do
something good
and said to her
mom:
– I am going to
give this money
to a homeless!
Her mother then
said:
– My dear, this
coin belongs to
me. You can not
give it to
someone if this
doesn’t belong
to you!
She then decided
to give her
mother the coin
back. She then
went to the
living room and
started to
wonder...
– But if I can’t
give out money,
what will I be
able to give?
She meditated,
looked at the
book shelf and
had an idea:
–I know the
answer! My
teacher always
says books are a
treasure, and
brings many
benefits to the
one who reads
them.
She took a book
from the book
shelf, which
seemed quite
interesting for
her and decided
to go outside
once again. Her
father saw her
whilst reading
his newspaper
and asked:
– What are you
going to do with
this book, my
daughter?
Laura smiled and
said:
– I am going to
give it to
someone!
His dad calmly
took the book
from her hand
and said:
– This book
doesn’t belong
to you, Laura.
It’s mine, and
you can’t give
it away to
someone else.
She then became
extremely
disappointed.
Laura felt sad,
since she was
trying to do
charity but her
initiatives were
getting nowhere.
She then decided
to walk to the
street and cry.
– It’s not fair!
I want to be
good and do good
things but my
parents are not
letting me!
She then saw a
friend from
school sat next
to a bench in
the part. She
seemed so sad
that Laura
suddenly forgot
about the issue
she was thinking
about.
Laura approached
her and asked:
– What is
happening with
you, Rachel?
Her friend
looked to Laura
and said:
– I am sad,
Laura. My grades
at school are
very low. I
don’t know how
to do Maths, and
have been
receiving really
low grades. I
might end up
missing this
school year....
My parents are
starting to
worry about me.
I don’t want to
create more
problems for
them.
Laura then felt
relieved and
said:
– Oh! Well,
there is no need
for you to be
sad then. I can
help you with
Maths. Let’s go
to your place
and I will teach
you everything I
know about it.
Rachel felt
happier and took
Laura to her
house. It was
located on a
very distant and
poor
neighbourhood.
They stayed all
afternoon
studying. When
they finished,
Rachel could not
thank Laura
enough.
– Laura, I
learned
everything you
thought me. You have no idea how
|
 |
good
it’s
been for
me to
meet you
today.
You
helped
me so
much. I
must
confess
I didn’t
sympathise
with you
since I
thought
you were
a bit
snobbish.
I was
wrong.
You are
very
nice and
a very
good
friend.
Thank
you! |
Laura felt such
a great feeling.
She then
understood the
real meaning of
doing something
good to someone.
When she less
expected, she
was able to help
someone without
giving anything
material.
They said
good-bye and
promised to
study together
in the future.
Laura then
returned home
and told her mom
what she had
done. She also
said:
– Rachel’s house
is very poor,
mom. I think
they need help.
I wanted to do
something else
for her. Can I
give her some
clothes that are
not fitting me
anymore? – She
asked, but
conscious about
the response her
mom would give
her. She
remembered a few
hours earlier
her parents
reprehended her.
Her mom hugged
her and said:
– I am so proud
of you, Laura.
You behaved as a
real Christian,
teaching
everything you
knew. As for the
clothes, they
are yours. You
can do whatever
you want with
them.
Laura smiled
happily. She
then understood
the real value
of charity.
– It’s true,
mom. They are
mine! I will
take them to
Rachel’s house
tomorrow. I will
also take some
shoes, a pair of
trainers and
some books I
have read.
