Once upon a
time, a healthy
and strong
pumpkin grew in
a beautiful
garden.
When she was
little, she
dreamed of
becoming someone
worth of value.
She was
horrified to see
her sisters, the
other pumpkins,
being taken away
to be eaten by
her owner.
She was
petrified when
someone turned
up. She hoped no
one would pick
her from the
garden.
As time went by,
she developed a
shiny orange
skin. The
pumpkin was on
her best
physical
condition and
felt proud of
her.
When someone
came searching
for a pumpkin to
bake it, she
then would
shrink and say
to herself:
— No one is
going to eat me!
This is not an
option for me!
When a child
came in the
wintertime to
look for a
pumpkin to play
with, she then
would disappear
through the
leaves and
become invisible
to human eyes.
She saw her
sisters at the
top of the
fence, without
their brain or
eyes, but with a
lighted candle
in the middle.
She would then
shake her head
and say:
— I will never
become part of
this child’s
play!
Her other
sisters, who
were resigned
and conscious of
their situation,
would say to
her:
|
 |
— This is our
destiny. What
would our life
be worth of, if
were not somehow
useful? Who
would do our
duty? |
Therefore, the
beautiful
pumpkin would
shake her leaves
and say:
— No; not me. I
want another
type of life for
me. No one is
going to eat me!
I am not going
to become a
scarecrow!
The other
pumpkins then
stopped talking.
They realised
her sister would
not change her
mind.
Time went by.
Only a few
pumpkins were at
the garden from
the last
harvest. Each
pumpkin found
its destination.
The pigs ate the
last ones, since
they were not
looking very
healthy.
However, this
pumpkin hid so
well in the
middle of the
bushes no one
saw her there.
One day, an
employee came to
clean the soil
and found her
there. She was
looking dirty
and worms had
been eating
her.
He then called
his boss and
asked:
 |
— Look what I
have just found!
An old, dirty
and ugly
pumpkin! What
shall we do with
it?
The boss looked
at it with
disgust and
said:
— Please, throw
this at the bin!
We cannot give
it to the pigs
either. It is a
shame but we
cannot use it.
The employee
took the poor
old pumpkin to
the bin. She,
who hoped for a
different
future, was
|
full of
remorse
and
sadness
for the
opportunity
she had
wasted. |
She then
understood
everyone has a
task to fulfil.
Hers was to
serve people.
The pumpkin felt
humble for the
first time. She
used to be very
arrogant, but
now she cried
and prayed for a
new opportunity
to God. After a
while, her wish
became reality.
Her seeds fall
into Earth.
She became a
tiny little
plant, located
right next to
the bin. She
became healthy
and strong. This
plant became a
beautiful
pumpkin tree.
She was happy!
She saw her
fruits growing
and thanked God
for the new life
He gave her.
