Once upon a
time, there was
a farmer who was
working at a
beautiful and
vast field. The
wheat fields
where so far you
could not see
the end of it.
The amount of
rain that was
falling from the
sky showed good
harvest was on
its way. The
farmer stared at the green fields
so
|
 |
satisfied
for the
good
results
he would
achieve
from his
hard
work.
|
 |
Therefore, the
farmer was so
confident on the
results he
thought he
didn’t need to
look after the
plantation
anymore. He
started to get
up much later
than before. He
began to analyse
his lifestyle
and decided to
spend the
resources he
would get from
the sale of the
plantation. He
then bought a
new car, a new
TV and a new
fridge. He then
started to stay
at home watching
TV or taking his
family out on
his new
acquisition. He
wanted
everyone
to see
his new
car. |
|
His wife got
concerned and
asked him:
— You are not
going to work
today again,
John? You seem
too confident.
You have stopped
cultivating the
land!
— Why would I do
that, woman? We
will be rich
soon. Harvest
time is
|
 |
coming
and our
production
will be
of great
quality. |
Time went by...
It was now close
to harvest time
and the farmer
decided to check
how the
plantation was
going. He got
awfully
frightened. He
saw that his
soil was no
longer fertile
as the woods
were taking
over. He decided
to check the
seeds. He then
realised only a
part of the
harvest would be
able to be
saved. The rest
of it would have
to be binned. He
felt desperate.
He suddenly
realised he
would not be
able to pay all
his bills.
John regretted
his behaviour
and cried a lot.
He recognised
his own
responsibility
as he lost the
opportunity God
gave him. If he
had been more
dedicated and
attentive to the
plantation, he
would have
realised what
was going on and
acted on it. If
he was more
careful and
worked harder,
he would still
been able to
save the
plantation.
He got back home
feeling
extremely sad
and
disappointed. He
then told his
wife what
happened. He
took a deep
breath, looked
at him with
compassion and
said:
— You see,
John.... We need
to value all
opportunity we
get from the
Lord in our
lives. We need
to do our part
of the task as
well. God has
given us all the
necessary
conditions: the
soil was
fertile, rain
was sent on the
right amount; we
got light and
heat from the
sun... The only
thing missing
was the farmer,
attentively
working on the
field.
She could see
how sad he was
feeling and
tried to cheer
him up:
— Please, don’t
give up. Make
sure you keep
this experience
in your heart
and get ready
for other
opportunities
that will come.
God, who loves
and is kind,
will give you
other chances to
make it
different.
Perhaps
everything will
be different
next time?
John felt more
comforted. He
raised his head
and smiled
whilst his eyes
showed a
different sort
of brightness,
in the hope of a
new future to
come.
