Pickles, the
Playful Dog
|
Brennon really
wanted to have a
pet. However,
his parents
would not allow
it. His mother,
seeing his sad
expression,
explained:
- My son, you
can't even care
for your things! How
will you be able
to have a pet? In
this case, we
would have to
take care of it
for you! It is
not fair. So, we'll
give you one as
a gift when you
turn ten, as
long as you
learn to take
care of your
things in the
meantime.
The boy agreed,
though
reluctantly. And
from that day on,
he began to tidy
up his room, put
toys away and
not leave
clothes lying on
the ground. Meanwhile,
he anxiously
awaited time to
pass.
On his tenth
birthday,
Brennon woke up
happy. He could
not wait to see
his gift!
Placing his feet
on the floor, he
saw, with
surprise, beside
the bed, a box
lined with
fabric and, in
it, a beautiful
puppy that slept.
Seeing it, his
eyes shone with
excitement! He
took it in his
lap feeling its
smell and the
softness of its
fur.
His parents, who
looked forward
to see the boy's
reaction,
entered the room:
-
Congratulations,
my boy! This is
a great day!
... - his father
greeted him with
satisfaction.
- So, Brennon? Do
you like your
gift? - said the
mother smiling
and hugging him.
And the boy with
a big smile,
thanked them:
- Thanks, Mom
and Dad! He's
gorgeous! I
loved him! I'll
call him Pickles!
From that day on,
Brennon lived
only for his dog.
He gave him food
and water,
played with him,
took him outside,
and looked after
him with all
affection.
Pickles grew up
and one could
see he was a dog
with a playful
temperament,
happy and very
attached to his
master.
 |
Brennon, however,
was not as
interested in
him anymore,
tired of the
responsibilities.
Noticing the
change in the
child's attitude,
his father
warned him:
- Brennon, do
not forget. Pickles
is yours and
therefore, the
responsibility
of taking care
of him is yours! He
is not a toy
that when you
get tired, you
can discard. Be
careful! Think
of what you're
doing!
- I know, Dad! Do
not worry. |
One day his
mother noticed
that something
was wrong with
the dog and got
concerned:
- Brennon,
Pickles looks
sad and does not
seem well. Are
you sure that he
is not lacking
anything?
- Relax, mom! He
is like that
because now I
have many
activities at
school and can't
be with him all
the time.
However, the
parents noticed
that Pickles was
increasingly
apathetic,
sluggish and had
lost weight. No
more running
around the yard,
happy and
cheerful.
Some days later,
Brennon came
home from school
and noticed his
parents were
very serious.
- Brennon,
Pickles looked
very ill this
morning and we
had to take him
to the vet. He
is sick.
- Is it serious? -
asked the boy,
scared.
- Yes, it might
be serious. Pickles
is very weak. The
vet says that he
experienced
hunger and
thirst. As a
result, his
health is
fragile.
At that time,
Brennon bowed
his head in
shame. He
|
 |
blamed
himself for his
friend Pickles'
predicament. |
He tried to
apologize:
- Dad! Mom! You
know that I now
have a lot of
homework to do,
besides the
sports, which
take time! Only
a few times I
forgot to give
him food and
water!
The mother put
her hands on her
waist and asked
seriously:
- Ah! ... "Only
a few times"? You
think that's
insignificant?
By any chance,
Brennon, do you
forget to have
your breakfast
when you wake up? Do
you forget lunch
when you come
home from school? To
have your
afternoon snack
or dinner? No! Never!
... And you are
always hungry,
my son! Doesn't
Pickles get
hungry or
thirsty?
Hearing his
mother's words,
Brennon lowered
his head, took
his hands to his
face and began
to cry:
- I know that I
acted badly, but
I really like
Pickles! I did
not want him to
get sick because
of me! What do I
do now? ...
The boy showed
such repentance
that his mother
commiserated
with him and
reassured him:
- Do not worry,
my dear. Your
dog will be
fine. The vet
said that
Pickles will
stay in recovery
for a few days,
then will return
home.
Brennon wiped
his tears,
already relieved:
- Thank God, Mom! I
would not bear
to know that I
caused my friend
any harm. I will
pray a lot,
asking Jesus to
help him and
that he may soon
return to our
home. And I
promise you that
when he comes
back, I will
take care of him
with love and
responsibility.
 |
Mother and son
embraced with
affection. Three
days later,
Pickles returned
home. He was
recovered and,
seeing his
master, ran to
meet him,
barking joyously. Brennon
embraced him,
asking
forgiveness for
what he had done
while the dog
licked his face,
happy about the
reunion.
From that day on,
Brennon never
again was
careless of his
dog. He would
always give him
food and fresh
water.
When necessary
he would give
him a nice bath
and comb his
soft fur. And
every day, in
the afternoon,
when the sun
|
was
gentle, he would
take him for
walks. He looked
after Pickles
with much love. |
Brennon felt
pleased with
himself. He
learned
something very
important: the
lesson of
responsibility,
which would be
worthy to him in
any situation
and for life,
guiding his
actions in the
future.
