The Orphaned
Kitten
|
Tina was a
beautiful dog
with soft,
velvety eyes,
soft fur and
long ears. She
was very happy
and loved to
play with
children.
Gus, her owner,
when came home
from school,
would play with
her or take her
for walks. He
liked to see
Tina running
down the
sidewalk, with
her brown hair
made golden by
the sun, waving
in the wind, and
barking with
satisfaction.
But Tina grew up
and it was her
time to start a
family.
Gus got very
happy to learn
that Tina was
awaiting the
arrival of
puppies.
When the pups
were born, it
was all joy.
They were five
in total but one
of them, very
feeble, did not
make it and
died. Tina was
very sad and
lovingly licked
the other
puppies,
snuggling them
with her body.
 |
A few days
later, an ugly,
skinny kitten
appeared in Gus'
backyard. It
meowed
pitifully. It
was newborn and
it was very
hungry.
Gus showed it to
his mother:
- Mom, look what
I found! A
kitten! Is it
lost?
|
- I do not know,
dear. Search
nearby for his
mother. |
Gus looked ...
sought ...
searched but
found nothing.
He asked the
neighbours, the
man who sold
popcorn round
the corner, the
people rushing
by on the
street. Nobody
knew anything
about the mother
of the kitten.
Gus went back
home beaming.
- Mom, may I
keep the kitten?
He has no
family! He is
all alone in the
world. May I?
The kind lady
stroked the
kitten, full of
compassion,
saying:
- Sure, Gus.
However, son, I
am afraid he
might not make
it.
- Why, mom?
 |
- Because he is
still very young
and needs the
milk and the
warmth of his
mother. We may
try to supply
this lack, but I
do not know if
we can. But God
will help us!
Gus and his
mother began to
give milk in a
bottle to the
kitten and they
put him in a
shoebox lined
with a cloth.
But despite all
their care, he
was still feeble
and sad,
pitifully
meowing. Gus
stroked him,
|
worried,
seeing
that,
nearby,
Tina's
pups
were
growing
increasingly
cute and
chubby. |
- Mom, couldn't
Tina take care
of my orphaned
kitten? - asked
the boy one day.
- I think it is
difficult,
honey. Dogs and
cats are natural
enemies.
- Still, I'll
try! - decided
the boy.
He put the
kitten close to
Tina, but the
dog reacted,
barking
furiously and
forcing Gus to
keep the kitty
away from her.
That night, the
temperature
dropped. It was
winter and Gus,
from his room,
could hear the
wind blowing
outside.
Remembering the
unfortunate
kitten, he got
up and
went to
see him,
thinking
he
|
 |
would
not
resist
the
cold,
since he
did not
hear any
meowing. |
Upon reaching
the place where
he used to leave
the box, he did
not find it. He
began to look
for the kitty,
grief stricken,
with tears in
his eyes. But -
Oh! What a
surprise! - he
saw a scene that
would be forever
etched in his
memory: Tina,
sleeping cuddled
with her babies,
and the kitten
curled up
between them,
calm and
satisfied.
An immense
gratitude for
the mother-pup
came over his
heart, realizing
the greatness of
that animal,
overcoming her
instincts and
letting
solidarity and
love prevail,
towards someone
else in need.
He said a prayer
thanking God for
the solution to
his problem,
thinking that if
all men were
like their dog
Tina, there
would be no
orphans and the
homeless in the
world.
The next
morning, upon
waking up, Gus
took his mother
to see the
beautiful scene.
When they
reached the
yard, the dogs
and the kitten
were suckling,
and Tina seemed
very proud of
her offspring.
Gus turned to
her mother and
suggested:
- Mom, may we
adopt a needy
baby?
|
 |
The lady looked
at the boy and
understood the
intent. She
embraced her
son, agreeing: |
- Yes, Gus. You
are absolutely
right. After
all, if Tina
can, so can we,
huh?
