The healing of
the servant
|
During the time
that Jesus
peregrinated on
the earth,
bringing His
message of love
and light to all
those who were
suffering and
afflicted, He
was always
surrounded by
the crowds.
One day Jesus
entered
Capernaum when
he saw a Roman
centurion who
came
to him and
pleaded:
 |
- Lord! I have a
servant at home
who is
bedridden, very
ill, and suffers
horribly!
The Romans, in
general, saw
Jesus as a
Jewish prophet,
like many others
who were causing
unrest among the
people, and
avoided Him.
However, that
centurion came
to him looking
for help for his
sick servant.
Noting the
sincerity in the
words of the
|
centurion,
Jesus
said: |
|
- Do not worry.
I'll come to
your house to
heal him.
The willingness
of Jesus moved
him. However,
the centurion
knew that the
Jews hated the
Romans for
having conquered
Judea and having
subjected its
people by the
force of arms,
and they did not
like to have
relations with
the Romans. So
the centurion
gestured to stop
him and said:
- Lord, I am not
worthy of you
entering my
house. But give
an order and my
servant will be
healed.
Before the
surprise of
Jesus, he
explained:
- Lord, I am
also a man of
authority! I
have soldiers
under me, and if
I say to one:
“Go!”, he will
go, and say to
another,
“Come!”, he
comes, and if I say to my
servant, “Do
|
 |
something!”,
he'll do
it. |
|
Hearing those
words, Jesus was
amazed and
turning to those
who followed
him, He said:
- In truth I say
to you that not
even in Israel I
have found faith
as great as
this.
Those who
accompanied
Jesus hung their
heads in shame.
In fact, they
regarded the
Romans as
idolaters and
polytheists,
that is,
worshippers of
many gods,
unlike the Jews
who were
followers of the
one God and
therefore
thought
themselves
superior to the
Roman
conquerors, who
they detested.
Then Jesus said
to the centurion
who was awaiting
his response:
- Go, and so
shall be done
according to
your faith.
With that
healing and
those words,
Jesus wanted to
show his
followers that
true faith is
that which each
one have deep
down themselves,
regardless of
their race or
religious
belief, because
all human beings
are children of
God, who
supports all
with the same
care and the
same love.
The centurion
bowed in a
gesture of
gratitude to the
Master and
walked away
hurriedly.
 |
Before arriving
at his house,
still on the
street, the
Roman could
already hear the
uproar of the
people who
celebrated the
healing of his
servant.
He approached
and saw the
joyful servant
who came to meet
him completely
healed. Kneeling
before his
master, the
servant poured
tears of relief
and gratitude. |
- Sir, I know
I'm cured thanks
to your
kindness. You
went to the
Galilean prophet
and pleaded for
me. Thank you,
sir!
The centurion,
helping him to
his feet, said:
- You deserve
it. You have
always been a
good and helpful
servant. Let's
thank Jesus of
Nazareth, who
healed you!
Praise God!
