Once upon a
time, in a far
away country,
there was a
female kangaroo
called Cadu, who
longed to have a
baby.
Cadu asked for
it so much that
God gave her the
blessing that
she wanted so
badly.
Some time later,
there was Cadu,
very happy,
carrying her
joey in the
pouch that
female kangaroos
have in front of
their bodies, so
they can jump
everywhere and
at the same time
keep their joey
close to them,
safely.
Kermit, as every
baby kangaroo,
was born very
small and weak
and needed to
continue to
develop in his
mother's pouch
|
 |
where he nursed,
slept and had
the protection
he needed to
grow up. |
So, the leaping
mom went
everywhere, with
her large hind
legs, looking
for vegetables
and fruits to
eat or simply
walking around
with her joey
Kermit.
One day, the mom
was picking
fruit from a
bush when Kermit,
now a bit bigger,
put his little
head out and,
looking down,
saw an animal
that looked for
something in the
woods. Curious,
Kermit asked:
- Hey! Who are
you?
 |
The animal
looked up,
trying to see
where the voice
was coming from,
until he saw who
was speaking: it
was a creature
stuck in its
mother!
- I am a rabbit
and my name is
Nellie. And who
are you?
Kermit looked at
the bunny,
amused:
|
- I am a
kangaroo and my
name is Kermit!
You are very
funny, Nellie.
You jump with
all four feet,
while my mom
only jumps with
two. You are so
small! Don't you
also stay in
your mom's
pouch? |
- No, my mother
does not have a
pouch like yours
- said the bunny,
and then asked -
Why do you stay
inside that
pouch that your
mother has?
The joey
replied:
- Ah! It's just
that I cannot go
out and walk
around like you.
Mom said that I
will only leave
here when I am a
year old. And I
so wanted to
play with you,
Nellie! I've
never had a
friend
before!...
Hearing this,
the little
rabbit lowered
his head shaking
his nose:
- I would also
like to play
with you, Kermit.
I have no one.
My mother and my
brothers were
caught in a trap
and I am alone
in the world. I
have no family
or friends.
And the bunny
began to cry: -
Wouaaa ! ...
Wouaaa ! ....
Wouaaa ! ...
Snif ... snif...
So, full of pity
for his first
and only friend,
Kermit used his
paw to pull his
mother's fur,
who stopped what
she was doing to
see what her
baby wanted.
- What is it,
Kermit?
- Mom, look who
I found! A
friend rabbit!
And he is alone
in the world -
and began to cry
too, along with
the bunny.
The mother
kangaroo,
bothered with so
much weeping,
ordered:
- Stop that
crying and tell
me what's going
on. You tell me,
bunny!
So, Nellie told
the kangaroo
mother his
predicament,
since he had no
mother or
siblings who
after falling
into a trap were
put inside a bag
by an evil man
and taken away.
And the bunny
added:
- Thus I feel
very alone!
Before I played
with my brothers
but now I have
no one to play
with!...
The mother
kangaroo,
penalized with
the situation of
the poor bunny,
after thinking a
bit, solved the
problem:
- Do not worry,
Nellie, I
already know
what to do. My
purse is big and
there can fit
two. So you'll
be with my son
Kermit. Starting
today, we will
be your family!
Come on, jump
in! ...
Full of joy, not
believing such
happiness, the
rabbit took a
big leap and
dived into the
pouch, feeling
himself sink
into a warm,
comfortable,
soft and
pleasant place.
He hugged his
friend Kermit,
thankful for the
friendship he
had shown when
he barely knew
him, and also
thanked his new
mother kangaroo
for having
accepted him as
part of the
family.
Thereafter,
Nellie slept and
walked beside
Kermit. At
mealtime, he
would jump from
the pouch and go
in search of
food. As he also
fed on
vegetables and
fruits, he would
take some to
share with his
friend Kermit.
Soon, the little
kangaroo could
already leave
the pouch and
they ran and
played like
brothers, full
of joy. One day,
fully-grown-Nellie
told Mama
Kangaroo:
- Mom Cadu, now
that I'm big I
also want a
family. Can I go
find a
girlfriend?
The mother
kangaroo, her
eyes moist,
said:
- My son, if you
want to go look
elsewhere, I
will not stop
you. But
remember: you
will always be
my son. Go, and
God be with
you!
Nellie went in
search of his
destiny but
never ceased to
be grateful to
the generosity
of his mother
kangaroo, which
had adopted him
as a child of
the heart.
