The Lost Package
|
Gus and Andy
were returning
home from school
and, when
passing through
a square, Andy
saw something
under a bench.
Curious, he bent
down and picked
up the package.
|
- Look, Gus!
Someone forgot
this. I'll take
it. I found it
and now it's
mine!
Gus looked at
the package and
warned: |
- Andy, someone
must have lost
it and sure
enough is
looking for it.
The other
shrugged and,
already sitting
on the bench to
see what the
package
contained,
replied :
- What do I
care?! The owner
should have
taken better
care of it. Now
it's mine!
Andy opened the
package and got
wide-eyed and
puzzled:
- My God! It's
money, Gus! A
lot of money!
I'm rich! Rich!
...
Gus moved closer
to his friend
and considered :
- But that money
is not yours,
Andy. Someone
lost it and must
be desperate!
Let's find out
who was sitting
here on this
bench. Maybe
someone knows
them...
- Never! I found
the package and
the money is
mine! - Andy
decisively
replied,
pressing the
opened package
against his
chest.
- Andy, I
learned with
Jesus that we
should not do to
others what we
would not wish
for ourselves.
Think about it!
Suppose this was
your money and
you had lost it:
Would you be
happy if someone
gave it back to
you? - said Gus
firmly.
- Of course I
would! ...
- So? Maybe the
owner is
desperate! Who
knows what they
were going to do
with it... what
they needed it
for?
Maybe pay their
rent? Or a
hospital bill?
Or ...
- Okay, Gus. You
win! But we do
not know who
lost it! What to
do?
Gus looked
around and saw a
hot dog stall
nearby. The two
friends went
over there and
Andy asked the
vendor:
- Did you see
who was sitting
on that bench
over there?
The man thought
a moment and
replied:
- It's hard to
remember,
because I'm
always busy...
but I think it
was a young man!
- Ah! Do you
know him? Do you
know who he is?
- Gus asked,
concerned.
- No, I do not
know him. Sorry,
boys. But why
are you so
interested?
- It's nothing.
Just curious -
Andy replied.
Disappointed,
they were
walking back to
the bench
when... Oh!
Surprise! They
saw a young man
who was sitting
on the bench,
covering his
face with his
hands and
weeping. Both
exchanged a
look, and more
hopeful,
approached the
bench.
- Why are you
crying like
that? - Gus
asked.
The young man
raised his head
when he heard
someone speak to
him. Seeing a
boy, he replied:
- What does it
matter to you?
No one can help
me!
|
|
- Who knows!?
What happened? -
Andy asked
pitifully. |
The young man
wiped his face
with his hands
and said,
despondent:
- I lost a
package with
money. I work in
an office and my
boss asked me to
take some money
from the bank to
travel. Leaving
the bank, I
passed by this
square and felt
like eating a
sandwich. I
bought a hot dog
and sat down to
eat. Then I went
away forgetting
the package. Now
I do not know
what to do!
Someone found it
and must be very
happy. And I am
desperate! How
will I tell my
boss that I lost
his money? I'll
be fired and he
may report me to
the police for
theft! But I am
not a thief! I
am very poor and
do not have that
amount to give
back!
At that moment,
Gus exchanged a
look with Andy
and saw that his
friend was moved
with the story.
Then, Andy took
the package he
had put in his
backpack and
showed it to the
young man,
saying:
- Is this what
you lost?
The boy looked
at the package
and his eyes
sparkled with
joy:
- Yes! Yes!
Thank God! Did
you find it?
Both confirmed
with a nod and
Andy handed it
to the young
man:
- Take it. It 's
yours! But next
time, be more
careful. Today,
we found it,
but... what if
it was someone
who would not
give it back?!
...
The very
grateful young
man hugged the
two boys:
- Thank you!
Thank you! You
cannot imagine
what a relief
you provided me.
Next time I'll
be more careful,
no doubt. I will
never forget
you. I am Mario.
And you?
They said their
names and
exchanged
addresses,
because Mario
regarded them as
true friends and
wanted to visit
them to get to
know their
families just as
he would also
like them to get
to know his.
|
So with a big
hug, they
departed. When
Mario was gone
and the two
resumed their
way home,
Andy turned to
his friend and
said:
- Gus, I thank
you for teaching
me a lesson. If
it were not for
you, this story
would not end
well, and God
knows what would
have become of
Mario. Now, we
made a new
friend and he
even owes us a
favor. Isn't it
that great?
|
- Absolutely,
Andy. But you
should not thank
me. Thank Jesus! |
