The Street
Sweeper
|
Walking down the
street towards
his grandmother
Felicia's house,
Charlie enjoyed
the sunny day
that morning as
he went, glad to
be on holiday.
Charlie was only
eight years old
but his
grandmother
lived just two
blocks away so
his mother
allowed him to
go alone. That
day, he was
taking a piece
of pie that his
mother had made
to grandma.
Along the way,
he saw a woman
working as a
street sweeper
and noticed that
she was sweeping
the sidewalk and
the street with
care and
dedication as if
it were the most
important job in
the world!
Further ahead,
in another part
of the street,
he saw a young
man who also
performed the
same job but
very differently.
As Charlie
passed by him,
he heard the
young man
complain, angry
and bitter:
- Stupid job! I
have to sweep
the street. What
for? So that
people will get
it dirty all
over again? I
can't stand it!
I deserve
another job
where I can earn
more. Stupid
life! - And as
he spoke he
swept around
carelessly,
showing the
anger he was
feeling.
The boy
continued on his
way until he
arrived at his
grandma's house,
who received him
with great
affection. She
offered him some
fruit, cookies
and candy, and
they talked a
lot. Soon,
Charlie said
good-bye to her
because his
mother had asked
him |
|
not to take
too long. |
|
So Charlie went
back home along
the same street
as before and
saw the boy who
was now sitting
on the curb
resting but
still grumbling.
Further ahead,
he saw the woman
who was still
sweeping the
street with a
smile as she
sang.
Seeing the boy
that passed by,
but had just
stopped to see
her work, she
stopped what she
was doing and
greeted him
cheerfully:
|
- Hello, boy!
Strolling early?
It's really a
beautiful day! I
never cease to
admire the sun,
which is a
blessing in our
lives! What is
your name?
Charlie smiled,
saying his name,
and admiring the
woman's good
mood, whose name
was Dora. Then,
remembering the
other street
sweeper, he
asked:
- Dora, are you
always this
happy when
working? |
- Sure, Charlie!
I always give
thanks to God
for the job I
have and try to
do it the best I
can.
- I noticed that
you sweep
carefully, in
order to really
clean the
sidewalk, even
though the wind
might then mess
it all over
again. Not all
street sweepers
act like that.
Why do you
collect the
trash so well,
leaving
everything so
clean? - he
asked.
Resting her
hands on her
broomstick, she
looked at him
and said firmly:
- Charlie, I
believe that
when we receive
the blessing of
doing any work,
we must do it
the best way we
can! If it has
to be done, it
should be done
right. The task
can be as simple
as sweeping a
sidewalk, a
street, but
should always be
done with love.
I have to
appreciate the
opportunity to
work because I
get paid for it.
How many people
wouldn't like to
be in my place?
Charlie
understood it
perfectly. His
friend Dora
worked with love
so the job was
not a burden to
her.
At home, Charlie
told his mother
what he had seen
and promised:
- Mom, my friend
Dora showed me
that all we need
to do should be
done with love
and goodwill.
When school
starts, I will
act completely
different from
the way I have
always done: I
will make the
best of my
classes and do
my homework with
goodwill and
love. This way,
everything gets
lighter!
The mother
hugged her son
fondly:
- Charlie, I
think you're
turning into a
lovingly
responsible
young man!
- And there is
more, Mom. I'll
help you with
the housework
too! I want to
be helpful to
people, just
like my friend
Dora.
- What a
beautiful thing,
my son! I'll be
glad to have you
helping me at
home. And
another thing:
tomorrow I would
like you to take
me to
|
|
meet your
friend Dora. |
|
They happily
hugged each
other. And the
mother,
intimately,
thanked Jesus
for the blessing
of having a son
like Charlie.
