The Possum And
The Hedgehog
|
In a very
beautiful forest,
there once lived
a little
hedgehog with
his family.
One day, going
out to look for
food, the
hedgehog met an
animal he did
not know. It had
black hairs on
its body and an
interesting
white stripe
running from its
head to its tail. |
|
They looked at
each other
curiously. The
hedgehog asked: |
- Who are you?
|
And the other
replied:
- My name is
Possum. And you?
- I'm Hedgehog.
The two observed
each other as
they sought
something to eat.
Suddenly, they
saw an
appetizing lunch.
Both rushed to
pick up the food
but they got to
it at the same
|
time. |
|
Now, looking at
each other
antagonistically,
both got angry
and reacted at
the same time as
it was the
nature of each
one: Possum
dumped a
horrible smelly
secretion on
Hedgehog, and
Hedgehog threw
his spines on
Possum, who ran
away scared and
whimpering.
In different
ways both
suffered from
the attacks.
Hedgehog could
not stand the
awful smell that
was now on his
body, wallowing
on the ground,
moving his
muzzle and
complaining:
- How awful...
It stinks!...
In turn, Possum
suffered with
the spines that
dug into his
skin, causing
him great pain,
and moaned:
- Ouch... ouch...
ouch... Help...!
Keeping away
from each other,
even though they
were suffering,
Possum and
Hedgehog looked
at one another
to see which one
would give up on
the food first.
They remained
there for hours
in the same
position. Time
passed, their
hunger increased,
but nothing!
As none of them
gave up, despite
how long it was
taking and the
suffering, their
increasing
hunger made them
get to an
agreement. One
proposed:
- Shall we split
the food?
- Yes - the
other agreed.
After eating and
already
satisfied,
Possum
complained:
- Look at what
you have done to
me! I'm all hurt!
...
- And what about
me? Look at me!
I am so smelly
that none of the
animals will
want to approach
me! Not even my
mother and my
siblings! -
replied Hedgehog.
Possum thought
for a moment and
proposed:
- Why don't we
become friends?
I'll help you
get rid of the
smell and you
will help me
remove the
spines from my
back; they
really hurt.
What do you
think?
- Okay. I accept.
We can't
continue like
this! - accepted
Hedgehog.
So Possum took
Hedgehog to a
stream that ran
nearby and had
him wash himself
well. Then, he
looked for some
very fragrant
leaves - that
was his secret
-, crumpled them
and tossed them
on Hedgehog's
body, removing
the bad smell.
After that,
Hedgehog, more
satisfied and
free from the
smell, removed
the spines from
Possum's back.
Finally, after
everything was
done, they
understood that
being friends
and respecting
each other is
always the best
attitude to live
without problems.
From that day on,
they started to
play together
like good
companions. When
they disagreed
with something,
the problem was
always resolved
in peace, since
both remembered
of what could
happen if they
got angry.
Thus we all must
act. Facing a
disagreement, it
is best to talk
in peace and
with respect for
others, and all
will be well!
