The Messy Room
|
Nine year old
Felix was a very
smart boy who,
at home, was
always keeping
everything he
found in his
closet.
 |
His mother one
day entered his
room at a time
when Felix was
not home and was
horrified by the
mess: clothes
and toys thrown
on the floor,
shoes under the
bed, books piled
on his desk.
She approached
his closet,
opened the door
and was shocked!
From inside, a
lot of pieces of
metal, plastic,
wires, boxes,
ball bearings
and everything
else that he
would gather
|
fell on the
floor. His
mother waited
for Felix to
return from
school to talk
to him. When her
son arrived home,
she took him to
his room and
asked for an
explanation: |
- Felix, what
does all of this
in your closet
mean? I was
shocked when I
opened the door
to put away a
few pieces of
clean clothes
and everything
fell on my feet!
The boy looked
at all those
things on the
floor and
explained:
- Mom, it's just
that I like to
invent! I see a
piece of metal
and I already
know what I can
do with it!
Please do not
throw them away!
I promise to
find a place to
put all this
mess in.
- Okay, honey.
But now let's
have lunch, the
food is ready -
the mother
agreed.
Felix followed
her thinking:
Where will I put
all those "treasures"
that I gathered?
Get rid of them?
No way!...
They sat at the
table, and while
having lunch,
Felix kept
thinking. He
needed to solve
that problem
fast before his
mother threw it
all away. After
the meal, he sat
on the steps
that led from
the kitchen to
the backyard,
thoughtful.
Suddenly, Felix
looked around
and saw it.
- How did I not
think of this
before?!...
He got up and
walked to a
small room where
his mother kept
tools and other
things. He
examined it and
saw that the
place was almost
empty. He ran to
the kitchen
where his mother
washed the
dishes, and said:
- Mom! Can I put
my junk in that
small room in
the back?
- You can put
your stuff there
as long as there
is enough space
– she replied.
- Thanks, Mom! -
the boy said,
giving her a
kiss on the
cheek.
After collecting
everything from
his room, he
took it all to
the “messy room”
as his mother
used to call it.
He used a damp
cloth to clean
the shelves, and
then spent the
afternoon
cleaning his
objects and
putting them in
place. After all
was done, he
called his
mother to see
what he had done.
Uncertain of
what to expect,
his mother went
along. So Felix,
proud of his job,
opened the room's
door and his
mother's jaw
dropped: It was
spotless!... All
the objects were
in place,
organized by
type, with the
smaller pieces
in cardboard
boxes with
labels. The
wires were
coiled and put
away in another
corner, also in
boxes just as
all the nails,
screws etc.
|
 |
The mother had
her eyes wide
open and put her
hands to her
mouth in
surprise: |
- My God!...
- Do you like
it, Mom?
- My dear, it is
amazing! You did
an excellent job!
I would like you
to do the same
thing with your
room.
Felix smiled,
amused, and said
he liked so much
what he had done
that he would do
the same to his
room.
His mother
hugged him,
satisfied:
- Felix, you
have unexpected
and important
skills. Use them
well!
After the
cleaning of the
“messy room”,
Felix started to
like to go there
and look at his
stuff.
Interestingly,
as he watched
the countless
pieces, he
imagined what he
could do with
them. So he
started working,
spending
afternoons in
constant work;
he would do his
homework first,
then run to the
messy room. So,
before long, he
had built
several things.
One day, his
school decided
to have a
Science Fair, to
encourage the
students'
creativity. The
opening day was
a celebration.
The whole city
was invited.
Upon arrival,
parents were the
first to see the
students' work,
and they were
amazed! So much
creativity!
But, to the
surprise of his
family, Felix
was the one who
won the
Creativity Award,
as he had built
a small robot.
 |
His parents were
impressed with
everything he
did quietly in
the messy room.
And as they all
presented their
works, each one
explained what
it was for and
how they had
done it.
Felix became a
celebrity at
school. Students
from other
schools were
interested to
see the
inventions of
the fair. And
they loved
everything.
An attending
reporter asked:
- Felix, you're
still so young!
How did you
create these
pieces? |
The boy thought
for a moment,
then replied:
- I have always
liked to collect
recycling
materials.
Unlike other
students, and
even adults,
just at looking
at the objects
for recycling, I
could already
see how they
could be used
and how the
project would
look after ready.
However, when in
doubt about what
to create, I
would say a
prayer, and
notice someone
by my side,
encouraging me.
"This friend" –
that I cannot
see but feel -
helped me to
continue, and I
could accomplish
what had been
planned. That's
it!...
Hearing him,
everyone was
delighted with
Felix, who
completed:
- I believe I
was greatly
helped by this
friend Jesus
sent me!
Those who were
there became
respectfully
thoughtful,
really feeling
that something
special was
happening when
Felix worked.
All of this
encouraged the
other students
so much that,
from then on,
every year they
had a Science
Fair.
The most
important thing
is that Felix
offered to give
lessons to the
other students,
even the ones
older than him,
teaching them
how to work with
recycling
materials.
