Carla left home
to go for a walk.
It was a
beautiful day
and the sun was
shining in the
blue sky.
Looking at the
street trees,
Carla heard
birds singing.
She looked up
and saw a bird
that, perched on
a branch, seemed
to take care of
its baby.
Soon she saw the
bird fly down,
land on the
ground, pick
something with
its beak and fly
back up. Then it
put the food in
the baby's mouth,
who hooted
satisfied.
Carla smiled
contentedly. The
baby bird would
not starve now.
But when she
looked up again,
she was
frightened to
see a huge bird
that looked like
a hawk land on
top of the tree
and stare at the
nest, where the
baby bird
chirped
unprotected.
At the same
time, Carla
looked at the
street and saw a
boy nearby. She
called his
attention by
saying: |
|
- Kid, look!
That hawk will
catch the baby
bird in that
nest!
The boy looked
up and said:
- And how is
that my problem?...
Carla, unable to
believe such
apathy, replied:
- What if it
were you who
were in that
situation? Would
you like to be
snatched by the
hawk?
The boy looked
back up and
acknowledged:
- You are right.
If it were me,
I'd be scared of
that huge beak!
But what can we
do?
The boy looked
at the tree and
saw that from
the bench next
to it, he could
climb onto the
trunk. From then
on, it would be
dangerous. The
tree was too
high and he
would find it
difficult to
climb up there.
Right then, he
remembered he
had his
slingshot in his
pocket.
|
He settle on the
trunk, grabbed
the sling, a
pebble he had in
the other pocket,
and stretching
the elastic, he
shot.
The pebble
zapped close
enough to the
hawk to startle
it and make it
fly away.
The boy climbed
down from the
tree, glad to
have solved the
problem. Now the
baby bird would
not be in danger
anymore because
the hawk was
gone.
When he got down,
he was received
with applau- |
se by
the girl that
thanked him for
his act of
courage: |
- Thank you! You
were very brave!
Now the hawk
will not come
back, I hope!
The boy laughed
and replied:
- Now it will go
elsewhere and
leave your baby
bird alone. But,
tell me! Why so
much concern
with a simple
bird?
Carla thought a
moment and said:
- I learned that
we all should to
be friends and
help each other
in times of
difficulty.
- OK! But it's
just a bird!...
Carla looked at
the boy and
replied:
- It's not just
a bird! It, like
us, is a being
created by God!
Our Father cares
for all His
children! We
have to put
ourselves in the
other's shoes to
know what we
would like to
have done to us!
I learned this
from Jesus of
Nazareth!
|
|
The boy thought
a moment and
said: |
- So I should
think like this:
If I were in
that bird's
situation, what
would I like to
happen to me?
- Exactly -
Carla nodded,
smiling.
- Ah! Got it!
... Today I
learned one more
thing, Carla! I
like it! ...
They said
goodbye with a
wave of hand,
and Carla went
on her way, glad
to have helped
to save a baby
bird.
