Six year-old
Lisa, who was an
only child, was
always asking
her mother to
give her a
little brother.
She missed the
company of
someone to play
and talk with.
Her loving
mother smiled
and took her in
her arms:
- Dear, I really
want to give you
a brother, but
it depends on
God, our Father.
Whenever He
wants another
child sent to
us, we will be
happy. For now
we will have to
wait.
- Ah!... All
right then. But
it better not
take too long! -
the girl agreed.
- Now go play,
Lisa. Mom has
work to do -
said the mother
hugging her and
putting her down.
The little girl
ran to the
backyard where
she had left the
toys she was
playing with
before.
Later, their
neighbor called
them to say that
her daughter,
Jane, was under
the weather, not
being able to
leave the house
and asked if
Lisa would come
over to her home
to play.
Lisa's mother
agreed and she
went over to
play with Jane.
As she left her
house, she
noticed a boy
sitting on the
sidewalk. He was
very young and
looked very sad,
but Lisa passed
him and went
through the
neighbour’s
gate.
She played all
afternoon with
Jane, who was
already feeling
better. Upon
returning home,
Lisa saw the boy
again, sitting
in the same
place. Talkative
and cheerful,
Lisa approached
the boy.
- Hello! Are you
waiting for
someone? - she
asked.
- No - replied
the boy, shaking
his head.
- So why were
you there all
afternoon?
- Because I have
nowhere to go -
he answered with
tears in his
eyes.
For Lisa,
someone not
having anywhere
to
|
 |
go was a
novelty. |
|
- Don’t you have
a home?
- No. I lived
with my mother
in the street,
but she got sick
and they took
her to the
hospital. And
I'm alone and
have nowhere to
go...
- But ... what
about your
family? Your
father, aunts
and uncles,
grandparents?!
...
The boy
explained that
somewhere there
might be someone
who was his
family, but he
did not know
anyone.
- But why?
Everyone has a
family.
- My mother told
me that when she
was little her
mother died and
her father, who
was a heavy
drinker, left,
abandoning her.
So my mother
went out into
the world, and
began living on
the streets.
Lisa started to
tear up. She
felt very sorry
for the boy, but
at the same time
thought it was
God's response
to her requests.
So, decisively,
she grabbed the
boy's hand and
took him to her
house.
Her mother,
surprised to see
her show up with
a ragged boy,
was about to ask
who that boy was,
when Lisa, her
eyes sparkling
with excitement,
said:
- Mommy! God has
sent me a
brother!
- What do you
mean, dear? -
the mother asked,
surprised.
- Yes, Mommy!
Didn’t you say
that God would
send someone
when it was
time? There you
go! He sent us
this boy! ...
Isn’t that
great? ...
Understanding
where her
daughter was
getting at, the
mother calmed
her and asked
her and the
unknown boy to
sit down, then
began to
explain:
- Honey, things
are not as
simple as you
think. This kid
has a family.
Isn’t it...
what’s your name
again?
- Flavio, madam.
- Flavio, you do
have a family,
right? - she
asked the boy.
He replied
telling the
story his mother
had told him and
ended by saying:
- But do not
worry. We have
always lived on
the street,
sleeping under
bridges, and
that's what I'll
do. It was your
daughter who
insisted that I
come with her to
your house.
The mother’s
heart was filled
with compassion
for the boy,
still so young
but already with
such big
problems in his
little head.
- No, Flavio.
Stay here with
us, at least for
tonight.
Tomorrow we will
go to the
hospital to know
how your mother
is doing. So, I
will fix us a
snack while you
play with Lisa.
The boy smiled,
grateful for not
having to leave
that warm and
comfy house.
When Lisa's
father arrived,
he was told by
her mother what
was happening.
Flavio, after
taken a shower,
was clean and
fragrant, his
hair was combed
and he wore
pajamas that
used to be
Lisa’s. He felt
brand new.
 |
They sat around
the table. It
was the day of
the Gospel at
home. They said
a prayer and
Lisa’s father
read a passage
from the Gospel,
commented on it
and then they
closed the
meeting with
another prayer.
Lisa’s mother
set the table,
and they had a
snack. Never in
his life Flavio
had felt so
good. He only
lamented missing
his mommy.
The next day,
they went to the
hospital
|
he
indicated, and
were told that
his mother was
better and that
she would soon
be able to go
home. Lisa's
parents looked
at each other
and gave the
hospital the
address of their
house, so that
they were
informed of when
she could leave. |
Thus, Flavio
stayed in Lisa's
house, and when
the hospital
called, they
went there to
get his mother,
who was
surprised to see
those people she
did not know,
but who treated
her little
Flavio so well.
The couple,
taking to
Flavio's mother,
who was already
recovered, asked:
- Mary, we would
like you work
and live at home
with us.
Mary accepted
the invitation,
moved. So Lisa,
very happy, got
a real brother
and playmate.
But she always
insisted to
anyone who asked:
- Flavio is the
brother I asked
God and that He
sent to me!
