Julia came back
home from the
street feeling
very sad. Her
little friend
Sonia had
quarrelled with
her because of
something
unimportant.
Because she
really liked her
friend and
neighbour Sonia,
Julia did not
feel like
playing or doing
anything else.
So, Julia sat on
the living room
floor, where her
parents were at
the time, her
father reading
the newspaper
and her mother
watching
television.
With nothing to
do, the girl
looked at the
television and
noticed that a
children's
program was on.
Interested, she
watched it. They
were talking
about something
that had
happened between
a boy and a girl
but that right
there and then
they had made
amends; the boy
apologized to
the girl and
they embraced.
Observing the
way the
situation was
resolved, Julia
sighed deeply
upset. The
mother noticed
her daughter's
grief and
wondered:
- Has something
happened, dear?
You were playing
outside but
suddenly rushed
in and have said
nothing yet!
Julia let tears
fall from her
eyes, and then
said:
 |
- Oh, Mom! Sonia
and I were
playing on the
sidewalk when I
asked her
something and
she treated me
badly. Then I
threw her doll
on the ground,
it broke, and I
came home. I do
not want
anything to do
with her
anymore!
Julia paused a
moment, wiping
her face, then
|
said: |
|
- It would be
much easier if
she had said she
is sorry, as
happened on the
TV program.
Her mother
smiled and
replied:
- Darling, come
here on my lap.
Look... On
television, the
actors indicate
how we should
act towards one
another,
especially in
this program
which is for
children! You
saw that the boy
apologized to
the girl, right?
- Yes, I saw
that.
- So you need to
analyse the
situation and
figure out who
was wrong with
regards to what
happened between
you and Sonia!
Who lost out?
Julia thought
for a moment and
said:
- It was Sonia
who lost, Mom. I
broke her doll
and she will
never forgive
me! - the girl
said as she
started to cry
again.
The kind mother
held her
daughter in her
arms, hugged her
with love and
let her cry;
when she noticed
that the girl
was calmer, she
said:
- Let's think,
honey. If this
had happened to
you, what would
you have liked
her to do to
you?
- I would want a
new doll, of
course! After
all, the doll
was mine and was
damaged.
|
 |
The mother
smiled and said:
- Well then, you
already have the
answer of what
to do in order
not to lose
Sonia's
friendship, who
has always been
so good to you!
What do you
think?
Julia jumped off
her mother's
lap, more
excited and
lively:
- That's it,
Mom! I have some
money in my
piggy bank and I
could buy Sonia
another doll!
- Very good.
You're right,
Julia. And what
if your money is
not enough to
buy another
doll?
The girl thought
for a moment and
replied with
another
question:
- Daddy could
give me an
advance on my
allowance?
The father,
hearing the
conversation,
said that it was
fine, no
problem.
- Oh, Dad,
that's great!
Then may we go,
Mom?
Her mother
agreed, and when
her father
returned to work,
he dropped them
off at a
commercial
centre. Julia
knew exactly
what Sonia's
doll looked like
and when she saw
it in the shop,
she was very
pleased. They
returned home
and the girl
went straight to
the house of her
friend and
neighbour.
She rang the
bell and Sonia's
mother opened
the door. Seeing
Julia, she
called her
daughter, and
then said:
- I'm glad
you're here,
Julia! Sonia's
upset today. I
hope you lift
her spirits!
Sonia came to
the door with
her eyes red
from crying.
When she saw her
friend Julia,
she smiled
looking more
lively and they
embraced.
 |
- Sonia, will
you forgive me
for what I did
to your doll? I
don't know what
happened to me!
But I brought
you a brand new
one, with my
apologies!
And she handed
the gift to
Sonia who wept
with joy. Wiping
her eyes, she
looked at Julia
and said:
- Actually, I
felt more for
our friendship,
which I thought
was over, than
for you having
broken my doll.
But thank you
very much for
this present!
|
Both hugged and
Julia, hearing
those words,
became emotional
thinking she
could have lost
her friend's
friendship.
Soon they were
playing together
in the backyard
of Sonia's house,
certain that
their friendship
was more
important than
anything else.
And Julia
learned that in
life, we have to
value what
really matters.
