7. Jesus begins to
preach - when John
was arrested, Jesus
returned to Galilee and
dwelt in Capernaum by
the sea, in the borders
of Zebulun and Naphtali.
Since then he began to
preach and say, "Repent,
because now is the
kingdom of heaven."
Then, walking along the
Sea of Galilee, saw two
brothers, both
fishermen, who invited
them to follow. They
were Simon, called
Peter, and Andrew, and
they left their nets and
followed him. Then he
saw two other brothers,
James and John, sons of
Zebedee, and they left
their boat and their
father, also after him.
Then Jesus went about
all Galilee, teaching in
their synagogues,
preaching the gospel of
the kingdom and healing
every disease and
diseases of the people.
His fame went throughout
all Syria, and so it was
brought to you all who
suffered diseases and
torments, and those
possessed by demons,
epileptics, the lame,
and he healed them.
(Matthew, 4:12 to 4:24.)
8. The beatitudes of
the Sermon on the Mount
- Jesus saw the
crowd that followed him,
went up a hill and sat
down, came to his
disciples. The Lord
began to speak, starting
there a famous sermon
that became known by the
name of the Sermon on
the Mount, which extends
over the cap. 5, 6 and 7
of the Gospel of
Matthew. The initial
part of the sermon are
called the Beatitudes,
the number nine:
"Blessed are the poor
in spirit, for
theirs is the kingdom of
heaven Blessed are
those who mourn, for
they shall be comforted,
Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit
the earth Blessed are
those who hunger and
thirst for righteousness,
for they shall be
filled, Blessed are
the merciful,
for they shall obtain
mercy, blessed are
the pure in heart:
for they shall see God;
Blessed are the
peacemakers: for
they shall be called
sons of God Blessed are
they which are
persecuted for
righteousness' sake:
for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven
Blessed are ye when
men shall revile you and
persecute you and
falsely say all manner
of evil against you
because of me. Rejoice
and be glad, for great
is your reward in
heaven: for so
persecuted they the
prophets which were
before you.
" (Matthew 5:1 to 5:12.)
9. We are the salt of
the earth and light of
the world -
Following the sermon,
Jesus asserted: "You are
the salt of the earth:
but if the salt have
lost his savor,
wherewith shall it be
salted? For nothing but
to be cast out and
trampled underfoot by
men. You are the light
of the world can not
hide a city upon a hill,
nor do men light a lamp
and put it under a
bushel, but on a
candlestick, and it
gives light to all in
the house. So let your
light shine before men,
that they may see your
good works and glorify
your Father which is in
heaven. " (Matthew, 5:13
to 5:16.)
10. Jesus says he
came not to abolish the
Law but to fulfill it
- Jesus makes clear in
his sermon, he did not
come to abolish the Law
or the prophets but to
fulfill them. And he
said that until heaven
and earth pass, one jot
or one title shall pass
from the law, till all
be fulfilled. The
importance of compliance
can be appraised by the
following words of the
Lord: "Whosoever
therefore shall break
one of these least
commandments, and
teaches men so, shall be
called least in the
kingdom of heaven: but
whosoever shall do and
teaching will be called
great in the kingdom of
heaven. For I tell you,
unless your
righteousness exceeds
that of the scribes and
Pharisees, you will
never enter the kingdom
of heaven.
" (Matthew 5: 17 to
5:20.)
11. We must reconcile
ourselves to the
opponents - Jesus,
after confirming the
commandment "Thou shalt
not kill", stresses that
it's not just that he
who kills will be liable
to legal proceedings,
but any person who,
without reason, is angry
with his brother.
Abhorring offensive
words against our
fellowmen, Jesus offers
us the reconciliation
with adversaries. When a
person is bringing their
offerings to the altar
and remember that your
brother has something
against it, should go
first be reconciled to
your brother and then
submit your offer. This
attitude is so
important, Jesus repeats
the teaching: "Agree up
quickly with your
accuser while you are on
the road with him, lest
the adversary deliver
thee to the judge and
the judge deliver thee
to the officer, and you
cast into prison. Verily
I say no way out of
there until you have
paid the uttermost
farthing.
" (Matthew, 5:21 to
5:26.)
12. A lesson in
adultery - Alleging
also adultery, as was
said by the ancients,
Jesus teaches that
whoever looks at a woman
with lust "in his heart
already committed
adultery with her." "So
states the Master, if
thy right eye offend
thee, pluck it out and
throw it away from you,
It is better to lose one
of your members than
that your whole body
thrown into hell. And if
thy right hand offend
thee, cut it off and
throw it away from you
because it is better
that one of thy members
should perish than that
thy whole body be cast
into hell. "(Matthew 5:
27 to 5:30.)
